We have a small snapshot of some of the amazing things we did today with the people from Plant to Plate. We planted, prepared food and had a shared lunch. It was the first time some of us had tried different vegetables and the first time some of us had cooked!

Plant to Plate People Came to Hokowhitu School!

It was amazing!

Lots of Plant to Plate people came to help us.  We planted and cooked.  We planted seedlings.  We planted spring onions, purple cabbage, spinach and thyme.  We looked flash in our gardening gloves.  Some students chopped, some students grated but we all ate the kai!  Our puku were full and felt like they would explode!

Boats make a splash!

Some students made waka for their treasure.  We took the waka to the  swimming pool to see if they would float.  The boats floated because of the shape of their hull.  We have large waka and heavy waka but they still floated because of the shape of their hull.

The water current and wind made some move and some stayed still.

Planting Seeds!

We have planted sugar snap peas and we are hoping for a crop of sugar snap peas.  We shovelled potting mix into the planter box.  We each planted several seeds.  Seeds need soil, sunlight, space, air  and water.

Every day we take the planter boxes outside into the sunlight.

Every day we water the seeds.

The seeds have germinated and the plants are growing.

Matariki is time for a new beginning!

Our Taonga!

Tararua Two had a cool homework challenge.  They worked with their whanau to design and create a treasure.  They had great ideas and worked with lots of purpose.  They brought their treasures to school and told us all about them.  Congratulations to you and your creative whanau!

Magpies in Ruma Waru

Weta reading group presented a play about Denis Glover's poem called the Magpies.  Elizabeth had red lips and Tom went light in the head.  The magpies quardled, oodled, ardled, wardled and doodled all day long.  Our actors were amazing.

Making Patterns

Our maths group did an activity today where we had to try to continue a pattern....
We even got to try and create a pattern of our own. Some pattern cards were more difficult to work out than others.

Measurement

Today we were trying to fill a cup of water using millilitres. We all used different containers which we learnt held the same amount! Some of us needed to check our levels!

Making Frost!

We read a book about Fizz and Frost. One of the activities was learning how to make frost.
We followed the instructions from the book.
First we went to the staffroom and got a pot. Next we got some Epsom salts and boiling water. We stirred the pot with stainless steel spoons. When our crystal solution was ready we went back to class. We put on gloves and cleaned the windows. Then we spread the solution around with sponges. We made frost!!!!!
We learnt that frost happens on a still morning (no wind)  when it is 0 degrees outside!

If you are in Kahurangi house then your T shirt will be blue.

Whero you should buy a red T shirt.

Kowhai you will look like the beautiful flowers on the kowhai tree.  Kael knows you will need a yellow shirt.

Writing to Describe

We are learning to write to describe. For fun today we arranged for one of the teachers to dress up and kidnap a child from the class. ( the children knew that this was going to happen so no one was frightened).
We pretended to ring the police, who asked for a description to help them with their search!
We had to be clear and include all the details that we could remember.

WANTED:

The Kidnapper had black hair, a green handbag, a black flowered dress, red sunglasses and mesh covered her face. She had a blue bow on the top of her head and behind it she had a tiny little hat. Emerald had been kidnapped.
By Eli

(fortunately by morning tea Emerald had been found thanks to Eli's clear description and normality had been restored to the class- phew!)

Hurricanes!

Ruma Iwa won a radio competition and had a visit from the Hurricanes.
The whole school got to meet some very special visitors, thank you Jacob!!!!

Reading Activity Ruma Whitu

Our reading group read a story about how to create a bird-friendly garden. We looked how to make a bird feeder. Today we melted some fat/ lard and stirred some bird seed into it. We pushed the seed mixture into the spaces in the cones. We tied string on to pinecones so the feeders could be hung in a tree.
It was fun and I can't wait to see the birds eating it.

We are poets and we didn't know it!

Chase bought us a chrysalis on Wednesday.  We were noticers and observers.  We drew diagrams and wrote descriptions.
Yesterday we used all our writing to paint a picture with words!
Chrysalis
Poets: Ruma Waru
Butterflies hiding in chrysalis’
Caterpillars hiding in chrysalis’
Caterpillars eat pale green leaves,
caterpillars eat bright green leaves,
caterpillars eat dark green leaves,
Caterpillars love to eat leaves
Caterpillars hanging and curling,
upside down caterpillars,
caterpillars slowly turn into chrysalis
Golden spots are dotted on the chrysalis
Golden dots are spotted on the chrysalis
hanging on the branch
 a green chrysalis turning dark
a black chrysalis is waiting for the butterfly to appear
A head is emerging
The butterfly unfolds out of the chrysalis
wet wings belong to butterfly
the stretching butterfly dries out
Oh my butterfly

Ruma Waru has fantastically friendly feet!

Ruma Waru has very friendly feet.  They walk around to welcome new  people.  They walk to make new friends.  They walk around to help people. Our feet walk around to give people hugs.  Our friendly feet help us do sport, run races and skip.  Our friendly feet help us walk.  Our friendly feet help us kick under water and help us do a starfish.
